How criminal cases work in North Las Vegas

Misdemeanors & Gross Misdemeanors

North Las Vegas Justice Court

DUI first offense, domestic battery, simple battery, drug possession, petit larceny, trespassing, disorderly conduct, and most other misdemeanor charges go through NLV Justice Court at 2428 Martin Luther King Boulevard. This is where your arraignment, pretrial hearings, and trial (if it goes that far) will take place.

Felonies

Eighth Judicial District Court

Every felony case in Clark County ends up in district court — regardless of which police department made the arrest. If NLV Police arrest you for a felony, you will have an initial appearance in NLV Justice Court, but the case transfers to the Eighth Judicial District Court in downtown Las Vegas for all substantive proceedings.

North Las Vegas Police Department is one of the most active agencies in Clark County. NLV PD handles a high volume of arrests — particularly for DUI, domestic battery, and drug offenses. The department patrols a growing city with heavy traffic corridors, dense residential areas, and a significant number of calls for service. Officers are aggressive about making arrests, and charges often get filed quickly. If you have been arrested by NLV Police, do not assume the case is straightforward just because the officer seemed confident. Arrests are easy. Convictions require proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

What we defend in North Las Vegas

We handle the full range of criminal charges — from misdemeanor citations to serious felonies. Tap any charge to learn more.

Not sure if your charge is listed? We defend against virtually every criminal charge in Nevada. The list above covers the most common cases we see from North Las Vegas, but it is not exhaustive. Call us with any charge and we will tell you where you stand.

Flat fee pricing — no hourly billing

You should not have to worry about your legal bill growing every time your lawyer picks up the phone.

One price, quoted up front

We quote a flat fee at the beginning of your case. That number covers everything — court appearances, motions, negotiations, communication, research. No hourly billing. No surprise invoices.

The fee does not change if your case takes longer

Criminal cases can drag on for months. If the prosecutor is slow to respond, or the court reschedules a hearing, or negotiations take multiple rounds — your fee stays the same. The risk of delay falls on us, not you.

Payment plans available

We understand that being charged with a crime creates financial stress on top of everything else. We offer payment plans so you can get representation now and pay over time.

What to do if you are arrested in North Las Vegas

The steps you take immediately after an arrest affect everything that happens later.

1

Stay calm and do not resist

Resisting arrest is a separate criminal charge that will be added on top of whatever you were originally arrested for. Even if the arrest feels unfair or the officer is wrong, the side of the road is not the place to fight it. Comply physically and fight the charges in court.

2

Exercise your right to remain silent

Tell the officer clearly: 'I am invoking my right to remain silent and I want a lawyer.' Then stop talking. Do not explain, do not argue, do not try to talk your way out of it. Everything you say is being recorded and will be used against you.

3

Do not consent to searches

If an officer asks to search your car, your phone, or your belongings, you can say no. Say: 'I do not consent to a search.' The officer may search anyway if they believe they have legal grounds — but your refusal preserves your right to challenge the search later in court.

4

Remember details

As soon as you can, write down everything you remember: the time, location, what the officer said, what you said, whether body cameras were visible, who else was present. These details fade quickly and they matter when we review your case.

5

Call a criminal defense lawyer

Do not wait until your court date. The earlier an attorney gets involved, the more options exist. We can review the arrest, identify constitutional violations, begin gathering evidence, and start negotiating before the case gains momentum.

Why it matters that your lawyer knows North Las Vegas

Criminal defense is local. The court, the judges, the prosecutors, and the police department all affect how your case plays out.

NLV Justice Court has its own procedures

NLV Police Department patterns

We see the same officers, the same reports, and the same kinds of arrests repeatedly. We know how NLV PD conducts DUI investigations, how their officers write reports, and where the common weaknesses are. This experience translates directly into better defense strategies.

No. You have a constitutional right to remain silent and a right to an attorney. North Las Vegas Police Department officers are trained to get statements that help their case, not yours. Politely decline to answer questions beyond providing your identification. Say clearly that you want a lawyer. Then stop talking. Anything you say can and will be used against you — that warning exists for a reason.
It is possible. DUI cases can be challenged on multiple grounds: whether the traffic stop was lawful, whether field sobriety tests were administered correctly, whether the breath or blood test was reliable, whether the two-hour rule was followed, and whether your constitutional rights were respected throughout the process. Not every case has a viable defense, but many do. We review the police reports, body camera footage, and test records to identify weaknesses.
They are separate courts with separate jurisdictions. North Las Vegas Justice Court handles cases where the alleged offense occurred within North Las Vegas city limits or certain unincorporated areas assigned to that court's township. Las Vegas Justice Court covers the Las Vegas metropolitan area and other parts of Clark County. The court you appear in depends on where you were arrested, not where you live.
Yes. Domestic battery is one of the most common charges in North Las Vegas. NLV Police Department responds to a high volume of domestic calls and officers are trained to make an arrest in almost every situation where they believe a battery occurred — even when the alleged victim does not want to press charges. We defend against domestic battery at both the misdemeanor and felony level, including cases involving strangulation allegations or prior convictions that elevate the charge.
In many cases, yes. Nevada law allows record sealing for most criminal convictions after a waiting period that depends on the offense category. Dismissed cases and acquittals can be sealed immediately. We handle the entire record sealing process including obtaining your SCOPE and criminal history, preparing and filing the petition, and attending the hearing if one is required.
As soon as possible. If you were given a court date, having a lawyer before that first appearance makes a significant difference — your attorney can review the charges, identify defenses, and negotiate with the prosecutor before the case gains momentum. If you are still in custody, an attorney can work on getting you released. The earlier we get involved, the more options we have.
For most misdemeanor charges, your attorney can appear on your behalf so you do not have to miss work or travel to court. There are exceptions — domestic battery cases and DUI cases sometimes require the defendant to be present at certain hearings. We will tell you exactly which appearances you need to attend and which ones we can handle for you.
